Online Marriage expands capabilities: service becomes available for widows and widowers
From now on, citizens of Ukraine whose previous marriage was terminated due to the death of a husband or wife can submit an application and marry remotely.
Previously, the system searched the register for a record of dissolution of the previous marriage. Widows and widowers do not have such a record, which is why applications were automatically rejected.
From now on, the system additionally verifies information on the death of the other spouse in the State Register of Civil Status Acts of Citizens. If the data are confirmed, the user can submit an application for registration of a new marriage in Diia. Paper certificates and a personal visit to a Civil Status Registration office are not required.
On 9 September, Online Marriage marked its second anniversary. During this time, over 78 thousand Ukrainian couples have used the service. In 2026, nearly 40% of new marriages in Ukraine are registered online.
By the end of 2026, plans include adding the option to involve a sign language interpreter in online ceremonies, as well as step-by-step launching international delivery of marriage certificates to 48 countries worldwide.
The service was developed by the Ministry of Justice jointly with the Ministry of Digital Transformation with support from Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP Program, implemented by East Europe Foundation.
